Water Wall

Water Wall is an award-winning concept for the future workspace, which helps creative teams in initiating and facilitating global collaboration through serendipitous social interactions. It is a wall-mounted display system connecting two remote locations through a responsive and interactive life-size video stream.
DIALING IN

The Product

The product is designed to break down the communication barriers between two remote locations and is a tool which compellingly encourages and facilitates a global workforce to interact with the same ease as they do with co-workers in the same local office space.

You can find more information about the project in this brochure.
DESIGNING A SYSTEM

The Challenge

People are profoundly short-sighted. Despite how perpetually interconnected everyone is today online and on smart phones, the scope of our conscious awareness is still usually limited to our physical surroundings. As designers, our challenge is not to overcome this problem, but to accept it.
BUSINESS TRANSFORMATION

Design for Collaboration

This is the mindset we had when we designed the WaterWall. It is intended to explicitly address people’s implicit shortsightedness, and harness their existing behavior in a new productive direction. We reframed the challenge, asking, “How might we transform those colleagues and resources so they are an obvious and salient part of their daily routine?”
OCT 2012
SAP Labs approached me and my team at Stanford University with the challenge.
JAN 2013
We collaborate with Trinity College, Dublin to do user studies and understand the problem in detail.
JUN 2014
Water Wall was presented at the Experience Design Summit at Stanford University. See the final poster here.
I love the gesture interface. It makes me feel like I am a part of the wall. Interaction with the fish-tank is a phenomenal way of improving communication between two different geographical locations.
Design Community
Stanford University

The Water Wall was successfully installed in SAP Labs in Palo Alto and Dublin. This helped teams working in both these locations collaborate effortlessly.
